Schoolcraft College — Michigan
Clinic Supervisor

Dear Dr. Born:

I have been working at Schoolcraft College as "Lab Assistant/Clinic Supervisor" in their massage therapy program.  While doing clinic supervision with the other Supervisors, I've had a chance to look at their reference books, usually a pathology text.   (At this point, the massage dept. has no department/clinic reference book so we all bring our own.)  The books I've seen are great books, very thorough and descriptive.  Good for in depth research.  However, when reviewing client intake forms and needing quick guidance, they fall very short.   To me, they are unacceptable for this purpose.  No client wants to wait (nor do you want them to wait - student clinic or not) while textbook material is sifted through in an effort to discern what the best approach to their session might be.

The Essential Massage Companion's "T.I.L.E. System" is fast and easy to use.  The overview and specific information is concise and delivers solid information necessary to make professional decisions when confronted with unfamiliar medications or conditions.  I use your book regularly in my own practice (where I usually have more time to review client history/conditions) and can't imagine helping in the student clinic without it.  The experience of working in the student clinic has increased my appreciation for this book.

Thank You for creating such an invaluable tool!

To Whom It May Concern:

Dr. Bryan Born has an uncanny knack for "being there".  I have participated in three of his workshops; two geared toward continuing education, and the other a teacher-training day held at our school for the purpose of adopting his textbook into our curriculum.  Each time I experienced a workshop I kept thinking, "It doesn't get better than this!"   His love and mastery of what he does, his preparedness and incredible ability to engage workshop participants, his superb teaching skills, and his gift for flexibility and creativity are to be highly commended.

In February 2006, I invited Bryan to come to Moscow to teach for two days; the first day was a continuing education workshop for regional therapists, and the second day was devoted to teacher training.  After the first day, one comment seemed to prevail: "How can a day of pharmacology be so exciting and pass so quickly? " This is testimony to Bryan's injection of relevancy and fun into all his offerings. We all learned so much, came away so confident in our abilities, and had such a good time doing it! Thank you, Bryan!!

We at Moscow School of Massage are very grateful for Bryan's expertise and creativity in facilitating the Teacher Training day.  None of us could have predicted the outcome!  We had instructors, owners, directors, clinic supervisors, and a student representative in attendance.  The upshot was that through his keen observation and interpretation of comments and the existing layout of the program, we came away with more than a way to use his book; we came away with a new model for unifying our program and creating efficiency within the system.

We came away with a new conceptual way of analyzing and evaluating the program as we change and grow and make decisions.  The new, central, coordinating focus was Bryan's brainstorm: The school's student-operated massage clinic has become the "higher power", the "hub" of the curriculum in which all the students' education is put into practice, and through which a feedback loop is formed directing the clinic experiences back into the various classrooms for follow-up.  Now, pathology issues are routed directly back to the pathology instructor, technique issues to the massage instructor, charting issues to the documentation instructor, etc., to be discussed and learned from in the classroom.

Bryan gave us valuable help in refining our paperwork in order to utilize his textbook and create unity among the clinic and massage and documentation classes.   With Bryan's gentle and inspiring facilitation we took ourselves apart and put ourselves back together, and at the end of the day felt energized and excited!  That's a lot, and it wouldn't have happened without him.  We are now in the process of instituting those changes.  (There's been a lot of hugging going on amongst ourselves since Bryan's visit.)

The Essential Massage Companion has become a required text at our school.  We keep several copies on hand at the student clinic for quick and easy reference.   The students and supervisors love it.  We also keep a stack in each classroom, ready for easy access.  We thank Bryan for his help, his book, and his friendship.  What wonderful gifts!

Dear Dr. Born,

On March 11, 2006 you conducted a class, "Pharmaceuticals and Massage: New Tools for Confidence", at the AMTA KY Chapter Annual Conference in Lexington, Kentucky. As you may remember, 95 therapists attended your class on our rainy but exciting weekend. We conducted an evaluation of all of our presenters and your evaluations were stellar! I have attached the excel file containing the data for your review.

I would like to point out a few of the important highlights. 97% of respondents thought the information was "just right". On a five point scale, with 5 meaning "strongly agree", you received a 4.8 on course relevance, ability to hold interest, and help in understanding the content, and a 4.9 on subject mastery. In short, they loved you!

Here are just a few of the comments to the question "What did you like most about this speaker:"

  • Engaging, animated, humorous, knowledgeable
  • Easy to understand
  • Very informative; kept us on our toes
  • Information presented with energy and his wealth of knowledge
  • Energizing style, held group's interest, well spoken and well-informed
  • Good sense of humor
  • Dynamic, informative, and elicited questions
  • Witty, clear, passionate
  • Able to talk to me, not above my head without feeling like he's oversimplifying
  • Able to make a scary subject not so much - by a lot!

In addition to the attendees' comments, as conference coordinator I can easily add:

  • Thoroughly prepared
  • Easy to work with
  • Provided information when asked
  • Flexible
  • Sensitive to A-V and set-up costs to the organization
  • Warm, friendly and approachable

On a personal note, it was fun to spend a little time with you and your family. Your wife is lovely and your children are sweet and well-behaved. Finally, your book is wonderful asset to my massage practice -- informative, and is easy-to-use.

In short, we were delighted with your presentation and with you personally and we were oh, so lucky to have had you as a presenter at our first conference.
You made us all look good!

Yours truly,

Katherine Warner, M.S., L.M.T.
